Merricourt: Somewhere & Nowhere, North Dakota

North Dakota's topography is flat and repetitive. Seemingly out of nowhere, towns occasionally interrupt the infinite horizon. When you've seen a few, you inadvertently feel as if you've seen all small towns in the state.

What many people fail to see is that many of these small rural communities are dying or abandoned. In this body of work, I explore the duality of one such town, Merricourt: as an overlooked nowhere place because it could exist anywhere in North Dakota, and as a specific somewhere that offers unique remainders of its identity. By juxtaposing these images, I want others to question the consequences of such dramatic population changes.
